When I started this blog all the way back in the very distant past (January of this year) I laid out a list of work that was in the pipeline. I figured, it being about mid-year, now would be a very good time to go back to those things.
I had mentioned four specific projects that I was toiling away on and even went so far to give a few tentative release dates for some of them. Well, as time does its annoying march, some of those projects have hit a snag and others are rolling along nicely.
Let me begin with Adventure Worlds. Not much has changed on this front, except that the site has gotten bigger. It’s because of this growth that I feel myself pulling back a bit from working on it. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m leaving it behind, quite the contrary, I’m more dedicated than ever. What it means though, is that since we are starting to get submissions more often from other writers, there isn’t a huge need for me to always have a story ready for posting. I love the site and will keep pushing it for as long as I can, but it has already somewhat served its purpose and it’s time for me to look ahead at other things.
Next, I spoke about two different projects. The short story collection and the comic mini-series. Since I already talked about the former last month in pretty great detail, I’ll jump right to the comic book.
If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know my history when it comes to making comics (if you’re not a regular reader, well firstly, shame on you! And secondly, go back to the May post to get caught up on my comic book woes), so it should come as a shock to no one that this is starting to look like another failed effort. Unlike the previous times though, this one was more a victim of timing than anything else.
Basically, when I teamed up with the guy drawing the comic, his name is Lou if you must know, we had quite a bit of free time in our lives. Flash forward to now, and I have two kids, Adventure Worlds and a book coming out. Lou is busy with his own life changing events, moving all the way to Calgary! So we’ve decided to let things settle a bit before coming back to the mini-series. Will we come back to it? I don’t know. I hope so, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that door is closed for good.
At least there are two short comics already done, and I will try to find a home for them as soon as one becomes available.
This just leaves one more thing: the novel.
At the beginning of the year, I was really fired-up to write my book. I started chugging away at it and made it to chapter 6, then got a bit overwhelmed and decided to switch gears a bit. My focus turned to another project, something with Ben, (way more on that later in the year) which didn’t even exist at the time of the earlier post. So the novel went on the shelf.
With that other project hitting a point where we can take a break from it, I decided to come back to the novel.
I’m happy I took that breather from earlier in the year, I really needed it and I honestly feel like the novel will be much better for it. But now is definitely the time to get back into it. With the various books that I have coming out in the next 1-2 years, it is the one that I am most excited about.
Alright, so that covers the old business, but what about new stuff? Besides that project with Ben (I swear, you’ll hear all about it soon, sheesh), Adventure Wolds has also started releasing a local zine. This is basically a nice little sampler of what Adventure Worlds has to offer. It also includes a comic strip written by Ben and myself, and with art by me. We will be distributing these things throughout the city in the next couple of weeks, so keep an eye out.
Well, there you have it. You’re officially updated. For more on Ben, hit up his blog, here: http://benwltp.wordpress.com/ and if you feel like reading some stories today, make sure to check out Adventure Worlds http://adventureworldsblog.com/
When you look at it that way, we’ve been way more busy that I had originally thought. Between our cooperative projects and our individual ones, we’ve got a lot of things on the go. I’m excited you are getting back into your novel. Makes the pressure that much higher for me.
It has been a pretty productive year. I know that I’ve down a heck of a lot more than I thought I would. As for the novel, I don’t have a real deadline for it, but I want it to be an ever present force in my writing schedule. As much as I like working on the short stories, I feel like achieving a finished novel would be reaching that goal I set for myself all the way back when I started writing.
It’s funny. My goal is to get that first novel done too, but my heart is really in short stories. It’s what I fell in love with when I fell in love with writing. There just isn’t the same kind of market as there were back in the 50s. Don’t get me wrong, I still want to write a novel, but I don’t want to stop writing short stories.
